Community Care in Haputale – Enhancing Caregiving Effectiveness

The goal of this project is to enhance home-based caregiving services by developing tools or system that tracks, evaluates, and improves the effectiveness of caregiving interventions. This system will document caregiver interactions, monitor patient health updates, and facilitate communication between caregivers, family members, and medical professionals. Drawing from Two Leaves Trust’s experience in addressing the challenges of social isolation and health problems of the people in the Sri Ramakrishna Estate, it would be helpful to set up a system that aims to support holistic care and basic healthcare education. Additionally, the system will be designed to serve as a repository for best practices and training materials, thereby continuously improving the quality of care delivered over time. It will help document the impact of caregiving interventions on the well-being of isolated senior citizens, providing a feedback loop that informs future service enhancements.

Community Health Screening in Haputale – Bio Tea Team Data Management and Engagement

Bio Tea Garden is a local fair trade producer of tea located in Haputale, run by Mr. Gnanasekaran. They are certified for organic tea and also manage the Two Leaves Trust foundation, led by Mr. Godwin, which funds various projects though they are currently focused on separate initiatives. This project is dedicated to creating a sophisticated data management system that supports the community screening process by capturing and organizing detailed household and health data from tea estate communities in line with the Bio Tea company’s vision in community development. The platform will be designed to record demographic information, health metrics, and participation details from screening events. This collected data will serve multiple purposes, including academic research, enhancing community engagement strategies, and providing evidence to support the Bio Tea Garden’s qualification for community service awards. The design of this solution will emphasize ease of data entry, automated validation checks, and secure storage protocols to maintain the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive information. The project also entails developing analytical tools that allow stakeholders to visualize trends and identify areas requiring intervention. By integrating data analytics and reporting features, the system will provide actionable insights that can inform future public health strategies and community outreach initiatives.

Youth IT education in support for telemedicine delivery in Haputale

The focus of this project is to develop a comprehensive user experience strategy and training framework that empowers local staff to operate the telemedicine platform effectively. This component will emphasize creating intuitive interfaces and easy-to-navigate workflows tailored to the technological proficiency of Two Leaves Trust personnel. The project includes but not limited to develop detailed user manuals, training videos, and conduct in-person training sessions that focus on core operational procedures such as setting up virtual consultations, file management, and basic troubleshooting. The training regimen will also cover workflow optimizations to ensure smooth coordination between remote doctors and local support staff. In addition to the technical training, the project will establish a “train-the-trainer” program aimed at creating a pool of local experts who can, in turn, educate new recruits. This sustainable approach is intended to bridge the technology gap and maintain high service standards over time. From discussions with Ms. Reka, we believe that the integration of IT and an additional perspective of training and work experience at the Telemedicine Program could be a valuable opportunity for their Winrose students. Conversely, the young and new perspectives of the students could be valuable to Two Leaves Trust. Therefore, we hope to develop a viable framework for this arrangement which could be largely beneficial for both sides. We had already garnered some interest from their students to accompany us during the Community Screening.

Implementation of telemedicine under resource-limited settings in Haputale

The primary objective of this project is to design and implement a robust workflow that ensures seamless, secure, and real-time consultations between doctors and patients. This technical solution will integrate features such as health records management, secure data encryption, appointment scheduling, and real-time video conferencing capabilities. Given the challenging network conditions in the region, the system will also incorporate adaptive bandwidth management and offline data synchronization to maintain functionality even with intermittent connectivity. Additionally, the platform may include modules for logging consultations, automating follow-up reminders, and integrating with existing local health systems to streamline workflow. Furthermore, the project will require a thorough assessment of local infrastructure limitations and the development of contingency protocols to address connectivity issues and equipment malfunctions. In parallel, the design will emphasize scalability and modularity, allowing for future expansion as more doctors are onboarded and additional features, such as AI-driven diagnostics, are integrated.

Repurposing Waste with Plastic-to-Fuel T3 Processor for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, like many other countries, faces significant challenges in managing its plastic waste, leading to environmental pollution and health hazards. Plastic waste poses a severe threat to Sri Lanka's ecosystems, including its rivers, oceans, and landfills. The improper disposal and lack of effective recycling infrastructure contribute to the accumulation of plastic waste, exacerbating the environmental impact. The aim is to convert plastic wastes in rural Sri Lanka areas into useful hydrocarbon fuel through the T3 reactor. This is the 2nd year of the project — the previous SIGHT team has successfully carried out experiments in the CBE teaching lab with an electricity-powered heating plate (1170W / 540ºC).
